DAY 22: NO VIRGINS

I just watched a video of Lesley Hazleton, giving a lecture titled "On Reading The Koran."

Her voice is so beautiful, I think I could listen to her all day. I am mesmerized that one would actually take the time to properly read the Koran, compared the translated versions that is, when one was not even a student of philosophy, not even a muslim.

She really got her point across: that there were so many things we didn't understand about the Koran. On that famous quote about 72 virgins in paradise, she said, there was no mention of a virgin in the Koran. She also said there was no mention of the number 72. Paradise was defined as garden watered by running stream, 36 times. She said it made perfect sense to her, because she lived on a houseboat on the running stream of Lake Union. "But the thing is, how come it's news to most people?" she asked.

  1. A "garden watered by running stream" - what a beautiful image. It goes rather nicely with your name, SparklingRain!
